Built with heart. Lit with love. Powered by legacy.
Where Legacy Lights the Way
Larocque Boutique shines brightly on Main Street in downtown Trenton as a welcoming place where shimmering chandeliers, handpicked giftware, and authentic Newfoundland treasures fill the space with warmth. But beneath the glow is a much deeper story: one of resilience, love, and a family legacy that continues to light the way forward.
For founder Joan Larocque, the boutique is not just about beautiful lighting. It's about carrying on a dream that never dimmed, even in the darkest times. Her late husband, Corporal Jacques Larocque, was a military electrician who worked on aircraft with the Canadian Armed Forces: a man who spent his career mastering the intricacies of power and wiring in service to his country.
Now, decades later, Joan honours his legacy daily through a store that proudly bears his name.
Service, Sacrifice, and Strength
Joan's story began far from Ontario, in Newfoundland, where she grew up before marrying Jacques, a proud French-Canadian. Together, they built a life defined by service, moving from Gander to Yellowknife to Nova Scotia and eventually Trenton. They raised four children along the way and embraced the close-knit military community that shaped their world.
While on his fourth deployment, Jacques became seriously ill. He returned home and passed away shortly after returning to Canada, while he was preparing to return for a fifth deployment. With strength and determination, Joan fought to ensure his memory and legacy would be rightfully honoured.
Today, Jacques' name stands proudly alongside his fellow fallen heroes: etched into the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial, the Camp Mirage Memorial, and commemorated at the National Air Force Museum of Canada.
"It took 10, almost 15 years to get his name recognized," Joan reflected. "But you know what? We did it. His name is there, where it belongs."
Building a New Future: One Light at a Time
After Jacques' passing, Joan relocated to Waterloo, Ontario, where she began renovating and upgrading homes to support her family. Through that work, she developed a reputation for her sense of style, especially regarding lighting.
"I used to buy lighting for the homes I was renovating, and my lighting supplier told me, 'You really have a knack for this,'" and suggested she open a lighting store, Joan recalled. At first, she resisted. "Lighting was expensive, and I didn't want to sell things people couldn't afford. That's always been important to me."
However, the lighting supplier encouraged her to open her store, promising access to products that would allow her to offer high-quality lighting at fair prices.
During this time, the physical demands of renovating and working with heavy wall beds were also taking a toll on her body. So, Joan took the advice from her lighting supplier and decided to shift her focus entirely to lighting, and the response was overwhelming. Customers travelled from Ajax and beyond to visit her Kitchener shop, drawn by her expertise and commitment to affordability.
Then, in 2020, with the world in flux, her daughters convinced her to return home to Quinte West: back to the community where their family's story had started. It was a return to her roots, and the beginning of something new.
Lighting Comes Full Circle
In opening Larocque Boutique, Joan unknowingly brought her journey full circle.
"My husband was an electrician in the military," Joan said. "He spent his life working with electricity and wiring. And here I am now, running a lighting store with his name on the front door. I never planned it this way, but it's funny how life brings you right back."
Cheyanne, Joan's daughter, sees it too. "Dad wired lights for Mom in every PMQ we lived in: from Newfoundland to Yellowknife to our PMQ in Trenton. Mom now sells them. It's full circle. His name is right there on Main Street, and every time we walk by, my kids say, 'There's Poppy.' It means everything."
Inside the boutique, customers find more than just lighting. They find a living memory: Jacques' plaque, his boots displayed in the window each Remembrance Day, and the warmth of a family that continues to honour him every day.
A Place Built with Heart
Larocque Boutique isn't just about finding the perfect chandelier: it's about finding connection. Joan has made it her mission to offer affordable, high-quality options because she remembers what it was like to build a home on a military family's budget.
"Lighting has become more complicated than ever," Joan explained. "If you make a poor choice, it's not just the cost of the light: it's paying someone to take it down and reinstall another. I help people get it right the first time."
In true Newfoundland spirit, Joan also brings in hand-crafted gifts and treats from the East Coast, ensuring that no matter where you come from, there's a piece of home waiting for you. The boutique has become a gathering place for local residents, Newfoundlanders, and military families alike: a place where everyone is greeted by name and treated like family.
"This store is built with my hands," Joan said. "But it's built with my heart too."

Lighting a Legacy That Will Never Fade
Today, Larocque Boutique stands as a powerful reminder that even when life forces us to start over, love, legacy, and resilience can light the way. From a young military family who once couldn't afford to shop downtown to a store that now carries their name and story: Joan has built more than a business. She's built a tribute that shines in more ways than one.
And in every light she sells, Jacques' legacy glows a little brighter.
